Ohio takes a trip to South Central this weekend. Quad is on his own thinking they’ll come away empty handed. Other than that bout and the Slaughter County/Emerald City match up, we are all on the same page. There are some top level teams to watch this weekend. We certainly aren’t hurting for good derby.

Philly vs Gotham ECDX 2011: 14-0 Gotham, third jam of the game. My thoughts on the jammer line: Looks like Gotham wants the back, same as last year. They won’t cross the pivot line until we are at least five feet ahead of them. Super. Fun. Looks like my girls aren’t going for it. *@$# it. Why should they have their way? If everyone adopted this selfish strategy, we would never play roller derby. Ever…Oh cool, the crowds booing. Maybe if I encourage them, Gotham will skate… OK, that didn’t work. I’m so annoyed. I’m gonna ^%*$ talk to Bonnie. Hmm, that didn’t help anything. *@$#. The jam’s over. AAAAAHHHHHH…

Part V of the State of Derby continues with USA Roller Roller Sports (USARS), one of the two largest organizations in modern roller derby (WFTDA being the other). The roller derby community has been waiting and wanting to hear publicly from USARS for quite some time. They have been a lightning rod for criticism, yet have opened the door for so many with their insurance program and are leading the way for those with Olympic aspirations.

The most contested game this weekend comes from the North Central region where #9 and #10 face off once again. At Brew Ha-Ha Arch Rival was able to take Chicago Outfit down. Can they do it again on The Outfit’s turf? We also have 3 MRDA bouts to watch this weekend and we’ll be keeping our eyes out East as Windy City and Houston visit the city of Boston.

The dust has settled in Feasterville, PA, as we are more than a week from the closing of [ECDX 2011][1]. While there were [many memorable moments ][2]spread throughout the 3-day event, one particular jam seemed to get more attention and discussion than any other. That being the two minute jam in the first half of the Gotham v. Philly bout in which neither jammer crossed the jam line.

Heading into The East Coast Derby Extraganza 2011 I thought I was going to be seeing Feasterville for the last time. 2009 had been the best year of my derby career, 2010 had been one of my worst, and 2011 saw my girlfriend, Miss Print, retiring and my best friend, Caesar leaving the announce booth in Cincinnati. I had reached the point why I was questioning why I was still doing this while many I knew had already went on? I felt like a preacher who was questioning his faith but was still hanging around the church.

Most people are taking the weekend off, what with ECDX behind us and it being a holiday weekend for Canada and United States. So, enjoy our MRDA pick….and, for fun, a few of us picked who would win the annual [Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest][1].

Continuing our first annual The State of Derby series, we hear from the [Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA)][1]. We sent our questionnaire to the initial invitees list and allowed them to respond by topic in general (omitting questions which may not apply to them) or the questions individually. Erich Bennar, aka Dr. Spankenstein, of the MRDA, responded to the individual questions. See how the MRDA is making sure men aren’t being shut out of the modernization of roller derby.

We sent our questionnaire to the initial invitees list and allowed them to respond by topic in general (omitting questions which may not apply to them) or the questions individually. Brandy Tomhave, aka Marzipain, from MADE responded to the individual questions. Hear how MADE is making something old, new again.

In January, [Tank published an entry detailing the case for removing minor penalties from the sport of roller derby][1]. This past weekend at the 2011 East Coast Derby Extravaganza (ECDX) in Feasterville, the WFTDA held its first round of public [“No Minors Beta Test”][2] sanctioned games. ECDX is a high profile event and had excellent live streaming coverage (High Definition archives and DVDs of all games available here) so many eyes across the derby universe were on these games. RDIT has compiled some initial impressions on the game from various sources, and hopes that readers will continue to share their thoughts in the comments.

Several bubble teams are hitting the track this weekend. The 10, 11 and 12th ranked teams in the South Central region all play and each are looking for that regional invite. In the West you’ll see the 9th and 10th ranked teams fighting to hold their spots and the North Central 9th ranked team heads into South Central land. Also of note, Bay Area Derby Girls are making a trip to the East Coast, hitting Charm City and Philly Roller Girls.

Continuing our first annual [The State of Derby][1] series, we hear from the Old School Derby Association (OSDA) and the Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA). We sent our questionnaire to the initial invitees list and allowed them to respond by topic in general (omitting questions which may not apply to them) or the questions individually. Liz Mikolajczyk, aka Baby Skates Nelson, responded in the general format for the OSDA while Troy Twibell, aka Major Problem, of the JRDA responded to the individual questions. We’ve put their responses back-to-back to compare and contrast the “old timers” with the “young whipper snappers.”

It’s my first time putting the table up for you because, as you can see by the delay, everyone at RDIT is extremely busy this week. Apologies for not posting this Friday. Everyone made their choices Wednesday/Thursday and they are now here for public consumption even though they have all been played and won or lost by now.

Between the US federal holiday on Monday and the WFTDA annual meeting in ‘Vegas, its a slow weekend for roller derby games. The most interesting games are the solid Steel Hurtin’ at the greatly improving Houston, and Rat City at Oly (if for nothing else, the long history between the teams.)
