It’s a big weekend, especially for the North Central with [a few important match ups][1] between ranked teams that will help shape up the tournament seeding picture. Here we have included only the most important games featuring top teams from the BrewHaHa but there are some other interesting games you won’t want to miss, most notably Bleeding Heartland vs. Ohio.

As we are getting deeper and deeper into the time of year when games matter the most, as far as determining the rankings that will decide who goes to tournaments, there are a number of important games for teams in all regions. The game with the biggest implication takes place in St. Louis where the NC #10 Arch Rival team will try to fend off NC #11 Ohio and preserve their slippery grasp on the top ten in a must-win situation for both teams (in case you missed it [see this article on the situation in the North Central][1]). Likewise, Providence at #10 in the East tries to hang on against the SC #1 powerhouse Kansas City. The Rocket City Rumble in Huntsville, Alabama looks like a fun tournament featuring a lot of mid-ranked South Central teams- without knowing the later round match ups we’ll just pick an overall winner for that one. The Outfit losing to unranked Tri-City would hurt them quite a bit, but none of us see that happening. The rest of the games listed here will be good, but probably won’t shake things up too much no matter how they turn out.

This weekend the Fort Wayne Derby Girls will host their annual Spring Roll derby expo at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Spring Roll 2011 marks an historic moment in the evolution of the sport of flat track roller derby. This year’s Spring Roll will feature teams from the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA), several unaffiliated women’s teams, and Junior Derby. It marks the first time that WFTDA and MRDA will sanction games at the same event.

With this weekend being Mother’s Day and also the biggest Derby competition in the world taking place, there’s only a handful of games on tap featuring top teams. Of those, however, some of the biggest names in the sport face off. This weekend marks the start of a critical period in the WFTDA season leading up to the Big 5, so pay close attention as the stakes are rising.

The next three weekends will largely determine the invites to play at the WFTDA North Central Regional Playoffs.

Unlike[ last week][1], we have a slew of games between closely ranked teams on tap. Unfortunately, few will feature video coverage, but the fine folks in Cincinnati and Gotham will do their best to satisfy your need for live coverage (interestingly, the Gotham/Steel City coverage is Pay Per View only, a move that I for one applaud. Five bucks to see two of the best teams in the universe play each other is a bargain, and a great way to directly support the hosting team that is providing the coverage. For more on PPV derby coverage, refer back to [Tank’s post on the issue][2].)

Strawberry Jam has been a fixture here at Roller Derby Inside Track as part of [our panel of weekly game analysts][1], and we are pleased to present her first feature article, an interview with her leaguemate Noxious Donna. We hope this is the first of many such contributions from her. Be sure to leave a comment if you’d like to read more from her, and suggest future interviews or article ideas as well.- RDIT editorial staff.

With this Sunday’s Easter holiday, we have a fairly low-key weekend of roller derby on tap, with few games featuring match ups with real ranking implications. In fact, looking at these games we all see no potential for upsets and we all agree on the outcomes. Come on someone, make us look dumb and pull a huge upset!

There are some pretty high profile games this weekend featuring match ups between highly ranked teams and some real rivalries. Bay Area heads north to take on the Rat-Rose City duo. These teams have faced each other often and have produced upsets; they should be a great pair of games to watch. Madison at Detroit has also become a bit of a rivalry, and this time around both teams are looking to regain dominance in the North Central after falling off a bit. Keep your eyes on the Cincinnati at Texas game too. That one could be very interesting and has huge implications on the strength of the North Central for 2011.

Most of the roller derby community will be watching Anarchy in the UK, the big international multi-game event that is being hosted by the London Rollergirls this weekend, as things are pretty quiet stateside. A few ranked teams are in action, although there aren’t any match ups that are must-see. D.C.’s New England/NewYork road trip should provide some interesting games as the match ups seem pretty even, but we aren’t aware of any video coverage for those games. Cincinnati hosts Ft. Wayne, which is worth watching for the video production and insightful announcing alone, if I do say so myself.

Being a part of Roller Derby Inside Track has been an interesting experience to say the least. The idea for RDIT was conceived last summer as a website that reported roller derby news. I know what you’re thinking, another roller derby website, are you going to start selling t-shirts and skates too? The thing that we set out to do, to separate ourselves from the rest of the roller derby websites and magazines, was to report about the sport and the culture, both negatively and positively; to question things.

This weekend there are two *real *tournaments- complete with brackets and a single overall winner! Because the late round match ups aren’t known at this time, we are just selecting an overall winner for each one. Other than that, there’s a whole lot of roller derby being played in Nebraska this weekend starting tonight, and several games that should be very exciting between fairly evenly matched teams (Brew City @ No Coast, Hard Knox @ Ohio, Charm City @ Philly, Naptown @ Minnesota). Pay special attention to the streaming video of Naptown @ Minnesota, not only should it be a great game but the MNRG video production crew do a supreme job.

My, where has this month gone? I’ve been living under a rock the past 3 weeks so bear with me as I get back up to speed. I’m bound to miss something fun and/or exciting in this latest collage of derby news so be sure to tell me about it in the comments or via the [contact form][1].

It’s a great weekend of roller derby with several high-power match ups and ranked opponents facing off across the nation. Streaming video is available for a couple of these games. Our pick leader Speed Bump is MIA this week, so we have a guest pick from Cincinnati coach Quad Almighty, who contributed[ a feature for us this week][1].

Flat track roller derby needs to have one starting whistle, not two. All the players, blockers and jammers, should start on the first whistle. Having two different starting whistles is unnecessary, confuses fans, and creates pointless complications.

It’s a pretty quiet weekend, with the most interesting action coming courtesy a 2 game East Coast swing by Steel City. Strawberry Jam is the only dissenting opinion we have this week, as she picks Boston over Steel City (this is a game that really could go either way and should be a great, close one!)

I don’t do recaps, and given that I was wearing many different hats at Wild West Showdown this year, the total number of full bouts I watched can be counted on two hands. Regardless, the three tracks of derby at the Wild West Showdown did manage to leave a number of impressions on me:

We are back to a normal amount of derby after [last weekends action][1]. This week features a few games that look to be close match ups and that are hard to predict. The Atlanta-Dutchland, Naptown-Brew City, and No Coast-Omaha games all should be very exciting. We aren’t real sure what to expect from Tallahassee-Memphis, but an upset by Tallahassee would go far towards getting them on the map.
