This is the derby news and randomness we found noteworthy in the past week. As always, if we missed something please add it in the comments below or contact us with your stories.
- Wednesday (2/2/2011) was National Girls and Women in Sports Day. I celebrated by not going to practice- how about you?
- Derby Deeds- among other outlets- are spreading “official” statements that WFTDA insurance coverage now permits mixed-gender practices & bouting by covered members as of 1/1/2011. WFTDA hasn’t officially published an announcement (that I can find) but they’ve done so well relying on word-of-mouth propagation up to now, why change? After all- insurance is simple, right?
- Austin Chronicle interviews Honey Homicide on the upcoming TXRD season. Mostly I’m impressed by the Edward Fortyhands image.
- Dane101 reports Minnesota broke the modern derby attendance record with 8,911 tickets sold. Mind you it was a lacrosse/derby double-header and we heard from John Maddening (via the AFTDA message group) that attendance was down to ~2,000 by the derby half time.

“As the market grows, hopefully we’ll be able to get onto the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iPhone and the whole nine yards.” –Frozen Codebase
Frozen Codebase discusses the future of Jam City and derby video games with the Greenbay Press Gazette. That’s nice considering how little they make available to the derby community. It doesn’t address my questions about the game: when the hell do we get more teams and an expanded soundtrack?!
- Mixed Media:
- Time lapse Lacrosse/Derby Mash-Up. I hear the Lacrosse match went into overtime and put the end of the bout past midnight. Don’t worry- it goes quick on youtube.
- 91.7 KAXE radio story “The Women of Roller Derby” features skater/opera singer Vroom Vroom Kaboom and others from Minnesota. It’s a good listen (because reading is hard) but it’s pretty long so download the mp3 and queue it up behind your Deeds podcast for a full morning of derby talk.
- Svengoolie’s School of Roller Derby Rude Ments was rediscovered by Gapers Block’s Kara Luger. This is pretty much the derby school I’ve always dreamed of opening. You should also check out the announcer I’ve always wanted to be.
- Mike Lawrence continues to produce some cool derby inspired art. Mike- I’m a fan- let me buy you a drink. If I’ve already bought you a drink, I don’t remember- I’ll buy you another.
- RCR skaters pose for Icon Motorsports catalog. Just… wow. Hell for Leather has more if you wanna pony up for a subscription.
- Community Service:
- Little Leagues: Across the pond, The Swindon Rail Road Rebels get some local attention. Admittedly, this article only caught my attention because I recognized Swindon from The Office. There are dozens of local news articles about leagues each week that I don’t publish. Tips for getting your local paper’s article linked: interesting story angle, sexy accent, or sending me a link.
